This programme built on contrast offers two sonatas (nos.5 and 16) that are both Romantic and intimate, musical expressions of Schubert’s nocturnal universe. Between them comes the lively and colourful Sonata no.11. The impassioned atmosphere of Sonata no.13 is related to that of Beethoven’s Appassionata. The vehement and stormy climate of the ‘Wanderer’ Fantasy already heralds the great piano works of Liszt, providing a striking contrast with the meditative serenity of Sonata no 17.
