What Synapson come down to is two young people at almost opposite ends of France. In Paris, there’s Alex, a jazz-loving pianist, who dreams of nostalgic, smoky back rooms where old fellows improvise the melodies of Billie Holiday. And in the south, there’s Paul, DJ for a band, spending his time between the skate park and the garage and still finds the time to play with the rhymes of Eminem and Wu-Tang. It was a holiday bromance that led to the formation of the duo. That was a long time ago, and it was an impressive fusion from the get-go. “Alex was the only person I could talk to for hours about music”, Paul explains. “Straight away, Paul became almost like my alter-ego” adds Alex. Together, these two didn’t waste any time before blending together their inspirations, which came together like clockwork. As soon as Paul relocated to Paris, they set their equipment to work, lighting up their keypads and rhythm boxes, to create the first tones of Synapson. “It’s a mix of atmospheres” they noted, where jazz and rap are coated with soul melodies and underpinned by the buzz of deep house. Their music is brimming with passion and comes straight from the heart, which ultimately gives it a chameleon effect as you could be anywhere when you listen to it - on a dusty road in the middle of nowhere or in the heat of a packed club. They soon had some impressive references for their portfolio: after their first EP, Haute Couture, was released in 2010, Synsapson went on to release the hit album, Convergence, in 2015.

An album dedicated to the ties between the old friends, rolling out crystal clear electro-pop in perfect harmony. “All of a sudden, it was as if we both managed to dance perfectly to the rhythm of the other, while doing our own things.” Oh, and another thing: the voice. Since they’re both fans of soul, a genre where words give real body to the curves of the notes, Synapson have called upon the tones of a flock of artists, including the delicate tones of Anna Kova who embodied All in You, the hit track from their second album which received a platinum disc after selling over 150,000 copies.

In 2018, their friendship stronger than ever, they’re preparing their second album, Super 8. Like an old camera focussing in on happy memories, the eponymous disc is a collection of thirteen tracks, unfolding to reveal the infusions surging through the lifeblood of the two producers. Tones evoking emotions and rolling horizons. “We’re representing our generation, we're embodying everything and everyone” the boys explain. The album sends you on incredible travels, beginning with All The Way Down, in which the husky vocals of L Marshall, brimming with lust, hug the curves of cabaret funk that transport you to a Philadelphia suburb. Flirt with the compressed bass of Night Time, with rapper Beat Assaillant inspiring rogue passion before veering towards Ce que l’on veut, an unsettling ballad to which you’ll find yourself under a clear, night sky before an “océan opale” (opal ocean), from the viewpoint of singer Tim Dup, charmingly disguised as Christophe in the good old days. The journey doesn’t slow down with the disco-fuelled surge of Hide Away, imagine playing it at full blast on a Californian highway or even as you travel across the land of bourbon with Sex You Up. A dreamy stroll punctuated by Shoot Again, a codeine-tainted tail of the lone Synapson, which pitches you to the end of the summer and whispers in your ear that you have to do it all over again. Characteristically, Synapsons have crafted Super 8 with exceptional skill and attention, contouring each note of the compositions and, above all, following their instinct. They smile: “We’re self-taught. We never know what we’re going to do next. We just keep going forward, that’s all.” Over the last few seasons, Synapson have circled the globe several times, taking their music with them. Over 200 concerts in just one year, including a large majority performed live and at major events, from the Printemps de Bourges festival to Vieilles Charrues and Solidays to the Paris Zenith which was sold out for the night. With the release of Super 8, Synapson are now preparing a new live show that will soon be presented to the public. You’ll also find the duo at the Printemps de Bourges festival as well as at a series of other festivals this summer before they head out on another tour.
