Pillorian was formed in early Summer of 2016 by John Haughm (ex-Agalloch), Stephen Parker (Maestus, ex-Arkhum), and Trevor Matthews (Uada, ex-Infernus) with the goal to create a unique, sinister, and twisted style of dark/black metal.

Pillorian adj.- of, or relating to, scorn and condemnation.

Fusing haunting melodies with avantgarde structures, dark folk elements and blackened walls of furious sound; the music of Pillorian is the perfect aural definition of its namesake. In support of this debut album, the official advance album single “A stygian Pyre” was released on vinyl & digital. Pillorian toured across Europe to promote their album in April 2017. With appearances at Inferno Festival (Norway), Roadburn (The Netherlands), SWR Metalfest (Portugal), and Dark Easter Metal Meeting (Germany) among others.

"If it’s not clear enough to you by now, Obsidian Arc is exceptional and has surpassed the expectations that were set out for it upon its initial announcement. " - Heathen Harvest
"Long live Pillorian!" – Ultraje

"The King is dead, long live the King" - 90% The Metal Archives
"Agalloch is dead, long live Pillorian" - Zero Tolerance

"The new black metal sensation trio from the US, born from the ashes of Agalloch! " - Metallian
"versatile and passionate songs in proportion to an enviable curriculum." - Rock Hard Italy
"There's a lot of anger, hate, evil and resentment in this album. It hooks you from the beggining" - Metal Hammer Spain
Truth be told, there are moments of Agalloch, Winterflyeth, Fen and My Dying Bride all over Pillorian’s Obsidian Arc, and that list presents a small array of diversification that the band’s influences makes easy reference to. For fans looking for something new in this black metal style, give the album a listen with an open mind. - Echoes and Dust
"Obsidian Arc is not only a solid debut, but likely will remain a strong contender for my favorite albums this year." - Metalbandcamp.com
"talented musicians and a focused approach of extreme music….black metal or not, it is still an epic album no matter what genre." - FOLK METAL.NL
"a solid, seamless work with a great musical variety and shows us that today there are still bands with many things to say" - FRIEDHOF MAGAZINE
"Obsidian Arc is the first in what should be a long line of boundary-free metal from one of the scene’s true visionaries. " - Dead Rhetoric
"more furious, but no less majestic!" - PITCHFORK
"an interesting record with great sounds. In keeping with tradition, it also displays a clearly defined mood, image, and art style that compliments the music well." LAST RITES
"I’m very impressed with this album to say the least. Pillorian as a whole show a maturity that comes from past projects, but puts forth it’s own impressive stamp on the metal world. I can’t wait for the follow-up." - Power of Metal
" 'Obsidian Arc' is definitely a great start for Pillorian. I am sure it will catch the attention of not only the Agalloch fans but also the fans of dark/doom/black metal in general." - Tempelores
" The songs on "Obsidian arc" are elements of dark metal, black metal, folk, noise and avant-garde clenched, and although these seasoned musicians deliver across the board quality, are - in addition to the slow, lingering final song - the songs that the pace and pit are slightly higher, grabbing me most by the throat." - Addergebroed
"pulses with dark energy, and from the gate it assumes a muscular posture. Runaway blasting is punctuated by sinister and brooding verses in which Haughm’s signature rasp features front and center, backed by delightfully articulate drumming or a behemoth low-end that lurches in lock-step." - Stereogum
"Damned good stuff." - No Clean Singing
"In listening to Obsidian Arc, I am reminded most of Triptykon. Pillorian is Haughm’s second round on the Westworld entrance train, going straight villain this time and, I must admit, it’s a good look for him. - Invisible Oranges
"This band is carving its own bloody path, and their first carving into the wilderness is a riveting, unforgettable one." - Meat Mead Metal"
"More than anything in his long catalog, "A Stygian Pyre" captures Haughm at his most bestial." - NPR
"The general atmosphere, tricky and icy, reaches its climax with 'Forged Iron Crucible', with its roots in the tradition of Bathory." - Loud and Proud.it
"this debut is a fine piece of musical progression. " - Metal-Exposure.com
"Whatever the case, Obsidian Arc marks a debut of considerable power and pummeling force, only hiding briefly behind Agalloch's formidable shadow before stepping out into the light for some sonorous riffs and crushing doom." - Symbiotic reviews
"Haughm has joined the hallowed metal tradition of jilted band members forming new bands that make their old haunts look tame by comparison." - Brooklyn Vegan
