Almost 20 years ago to the day, Arnim Teutoburg-Weiß entered the now legendary Berlin basement on Alte Schönhauser Street 48/49, where he met up with guitar players Peter Baumann and Bernd Kurtzke. The rest is history. Over the years, the friends watched their mutual band, the Beatsteaks, evolve from a small Berlin-based punk attraction to one of the nation’s biggest rock outfits. Now, in light of their countless national and international tours, performances at the most renowned European festivals as well as numerous gold- and platinum-certified albums, the time has come to round-up this unparalleled run and extraordinary career, spanning the past two decades: The official “Beatsteaks – 23 Singles” release compiles 21 classics, along with their brand-new single “Ticket” and the exclusively recorded “Mad River”, in an anniversary collection honoring the band’s unique body of work.
After victoriously competing to open for the Sex Pistols, the Beatsteaks initially embarked on the classic Rock’n’Roll trail: myriads of concerts on a slow, uphill grind through the boondocks. Following several changes in formation, the currently active roster came into place at the turn of the millenium: Baumann and Kurtzke on guitar, singer Teutoburg-Weiß, with Thomas Götz on drums and Torsten Scholz on bass.
The band’s actual breakthrough came about in 2004 with their fourth album “Smack Smash”, which reached the #11 spot in the German charts, went platinum and earned them an MTV Music Award as “Best German Act”. The Beatsteaks have since continued their success story with three more studio albums and countless, celebrated performances. In 2007 their gold-certified album “.limbo messiah” reached #3 in the charts, while their 2011 gold-certified longplayer “Boombox” landed them a first ever #1 spot in the German Media Control charts. Their 2008-released “Kanonen auf Spatzen” live DVD (transl. ‘Aiming Cannons at Sparrows’) further documented the exceptional energy they perpetually bring to the stage and was subsequently awarded triple gold as well as platinum. But the Beatsteaks would not be the Beatsteaks if they simply rested on their laurels. As such, the Berliners continuously sought out new challenges, while bringing their show to internationally acclaimed festivals the likes of Sziget (Hungary), Roskilde (Denmark) and Pinkpop (the Netherlands).
Their latest studio album impressively reveals this process. The self-titled LP shows the Beatsteaks at the height of their craft and ultimately reaping the rewards, as ‘Beatsteaks’ once again entered the German charts at the #1 spot. Thus, listening to the new ‘Beatsteaks – 23 Singles’ collection is like watching the past 20 years fly by in fast forward, as the record documents a unique, musical evolution, reaching new heights with two brand-new songs.
