Chicago neo-soul singer Jamila Woods released her great debut Heavn last year, and now she’s inked a deal with Jagjaguwar, who give the album a physical release. The album, which was originally released for free on SoundCloud, assembles a troupe of Woods’ fellow Chicagoans, including Chance the Rapper, Noname, Saba, PeterCottontale, Kweku Collins and oddCouple. The healing neo-soul of Lonely Lonely and Emerald St., jagged hip-hop of blk girl soldier, and folk rock vibes of Stellar get even more far-flung, but coalesce into a beautifully melded body of work. It’s a cohesive, ambitious offering that manages to capture the ambivalence in the love and pride she has for her plagued city and the people that are trying desperately to heal it.
