This Is Soul inspired a new generation of soul music fans and became an immediate success when it was released in 1968. The original featured a dozen songs performed by many of the best artists from the Stax and Atlantic record labels, including Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave, Solomon Burke and more.

On June 22, celebrating the collection’s 50th year anniversary, $tateside will reissue an expanded version of THIS IS SOUL on CD. The original mono version of the 12-track LP will be reissued on vinyl the same day. The music will also be available digitally and via streaming services.

Around the original release of this iconic compilation, mainstream radio stations were not playing a significant amount of soul music. Just about the only way to hear this kind of music was to buy albums imported from America, which were hard to find and expensive. When THIS IS SOUL made its debut, it introduced countless listeners to some of the greatest soul music that was being recorded in the U.S during the 1960s.

Widely regarded as the definitive soul compilation of its time, THIS IS SOUL presented a stellar selection of songs with “I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You)” (Aretha Franklin), “Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa (Sad Song)” (Otis Redding), “Mustang Sally” (Wilson Pickett) and “When A Man Loves A Woman” (Percy Sledge). The other extraordinary artists featured on the album were Carla Thomas, Arthur Conley, Eddie Floyd, Sam & Dave, Solomon Burke and Ben E. King.

Rhino expanded the original album in 2007, more than doubling its size with 17 bonus tracks. That version featured additional songs by Franklin (“Save Me”), Redding (“Hard To Handle”), Pickett (“Funky Broadway”), Sam & Dave (“Hold On I’m Coming”), Floyd (“Big Bird”) and Conley (“Funky Street”).

The collection also welcomed several other artists into the mix with contributions from The Bar-Kays (“Soul Finger”), King Curtis (“Memphis Soul Stew”), Archie Bell & The Drells (“Tighten Up Pt. 1”), Soul Brother Six (“Some Kind Of Wonderful”), Jeanne & The Darlings (“Soul Girl”), Barbara Lynn (“You’re Losing Me”), and more.
