With Every Valley, J. Willgoose, Esq. take us on a journey down the mineshafts of the South Wales valleys, with the stories found there a black mirror to the plight of workers everywhere.. Previous albums have focused on the wide-ranging subjects of World War II and the Space Race. Although Every Valley is the story of one industry in a region and time far from ours, the tales of a disenfranchised working class in this age of turmoil could not be more relevant.
Although the concept is localized and historical, J. Willgoose, Esq hopes the story is “applicable to industries all over the western world and possibly beyond, in the way that the Industrial Revolution generated these communities that were so dependent on one particular industry, and what happens to that community when you remove that industry from it, and where that leaves us now”
This new track, the second the band have unveiled from the new album, focusses on the political awakening among the women’s support groups at the time of the South Wales mining strike between 1984-1985. Speaking about the importance of having the band on the single and of covering the role of women’s group’s during the strike, J. Willgoose, Esq. explains:
“When I was doing the research for this album, one of the stories that leapt out at me most obviously was of the role of women's support groups in the strike. It seemed like a genuine political awakening for a whole generation of women, who suddenly came to realize both their potential and the power they had to shape the society they were part of; I really wanted to try to do their movement justice. Getting Haiku Salut on board, as well as samples of women talking about their role in the strike, was another key factor for me in putting this song together”.
