Only a few works in the whole history of music have been as popular as Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos. With their varied solo parts – horns calling hunters to the chase, pastoral recorders, showy trumpets – they can be understood as Bach’s portrait of the music-loving margrave of Brandenburg-Schwedt, to whom the concertos are dedicated. Above all however they are dazzling, rousing examples of the Baroque concerto form.
