Erato presents a 3-CD slipcase edition of Federico García Lorca song settings by guitarist, singer and composer Vicente Pradal.
The works of the Andalusian poet and playwright Fédérico García Lorca (1898-1936) have provided constant stimulus for the guitarist and composer Vicente Pradal. Pradal feels a close personal connection with the ill-fated writer: although born in Toulouse, he is of Spanish extraction, with a grandfather who was a Republican politician in the province of Almería, and a great-grandfather who was Lorca’s schoolmaster. Pradal describes Lorca as “a true, universal genius, the great contemporary Spanish poet, soaked in the culture of Andalusia and flamenco.” He adds that “his poetry is extremely musical…He is an inspiration to musicians.”
This collection draws together Vicente Pradal’s three song cycles on the most evocative poems by the bard of Grenada, Federico García Lorca: from the LLANTO for Ignacio Sánchez Mejías, a sublime funerary lament for a fallen bullfighter, to the ROMANCERO GITANO in which the poet proclaims his love and fascination for the persecuted gypsy race, and the DIVÀN DEL TAMARIT, the intimate sonnets of dark love.
This trilogy is testimony to a labour of love spanning several years: Vicente Pradal has brought Lorca’s oeuvre to a wider audience in France, Spain and around the world in passionate song.
Each setting is like a finely embroidered garment hand-stitched for each poem, and the quality of the performances brings depth and strong commitment to the music.
Lorca is multi-faceted, unique, eternal: the universal Andalusian.
