The Birmingham Effect: Simon Rattle and the CBSO
In September 1980, when Simon Rattle stepped on stage at Birmingham Town Hall for the first time as principal conductor of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, he was just twenty-five years old. Fast-forward to 30 August 1998, when he performed his final concert as music director of the CBSO: Rattle, or Sir Simon, now stood on the podium of Symphony Hall, a purpose-built venue whose acoustics had been specified by the man himself and which had turned out to be amongst the finest in Europe. He and the orchestra had just returned from the Salzburg Festival, and the first half of their programme had included a recent commission from a twenty-seven-year-old British composer. A 2000-strong audience had cheered it to the rafters.
The transformation that Rattle wrought in Birmingham over an unprecedented eighteen-year tenure went beyond the artistic fortunes of one particular orchestra. Indeed, the CBSO’s prestige had transformed the economic prospects of the UK’s second city — planners talked of a “Birmingham Effect”. Rattle and his musicians had done this on the basis of a repertoire that had transformed the definition of a symphony orchestra in the late twentieth century. “Don’t expect me to conduct Beethoven symphonies and all the great works”, he told the CBSO’s chairman in 1978.
In fact, Rattle performed the Austro-German classics throughout those eighteen years, often in radically imaginative contexts. But boldly (and refreshingly) he insisted that his artistic journey with the CBSO was a joint process of growth. London-based critics who grumbled that he should move on to a more glamorous music directorship missed the point; orchestra-building, audience-building, artistic exploration and Rattle’s own self-education went hand in hand.
Rattle and the CBSO performed and recorded the repertoire in which they felt they had the most urgent things to say. Sibelius and Mahler took pride of place, the starting point for a bright-eyed, open-minded exploration of those composers’ twentieth-century legacy. Messiaen, Stravinsky and the music of Henze, John Adams and the young Mark-Anthony Turnage began to attract sizeable and inquisitive audiences.
“The 934 concerts that he did included music by 113 composers, of whom 84 were twentieth-century and no fewer than 36 were living when we played their pieces”, notes Ed Smith, chief executive of the CBSO from 1978 to 1999. Rattle’s decision to wait until 1995 before undertaking his first full Beethoven cycle was profoundly considered.
Even then, he viewed it as a first step. “What Simon is quietly doing there has the potential to create a model of change for every orchestra in the country”, commented the composer Oliver Knussen, as early as 1987. “The conductor is growing into the repertory with the orchestra; it’s unique, and it’s how it should be done.”
“For me, the most important thing about recordings is that they are the most effective way to make the orchestra play better […]
None of these recordings I’m making now is my last will and testament.” - Simon Rattle, 1986
The Recordings
“I do believe that there are certain things ― such as human discourse, friendship and music ― that are meant to be live”, Rattle told The Daily Telegraph in 1999. “To be limited to recordings is like choosing snapshots of your children over the children themselves.” His approach to recording with the CBSO was to try and re-create the energy, spontaneity and living quality of a concert performance.
“We try now to do more and more straight performances in the recording studio, with as few re-takes as possible”, he told Nicholas Kenyon during the recording of Mahler’s Resurrection symphony in 1986. Later, he would come to favour recordings based wholly on live performances ― “You need to hear the rough edges.” Rattle’s discs with the CBSO are snapshots not just of a living relationship between conductor and orchestra, but of an ongoing process of artistic exploration.
That process begins with a series of major statements of intent: the first British recording of Janáček’s Glagolitic Mass ― one of the high points of Rattle’s first full season in Birmingham, recorded barely five months after his first concert as principal conductor ― and only the second recording ever made of Britten’s War Requiem. As the orchestra that gave its premiere in 1962, the CBSO has a unique performance tradition in this work.
A series of shorter Britten works signalled a determination to widen the canon: Rattle had conducted (incredibly) the world premiere of Britten’s American Overture just six months before recording it in early 1984. He was to have conducted the UK premiere of the equally rare Occasional Overture in October 1983, had the birth of his son Sacha not intervened: Rattle’s mentor John Carewe covered for the new dad. Elise Ross, then Rattle’s wife, had already featured on his September 1982 recording of Kurt Weill’s The Seven Deadly Sins, the first to use Weill’s original keys. “Rattle really appreciates the colour and wit”, wrote Opera magazine.
Growing together
By now a “Rattle sound” was emerging. “The Rachmaninov Symphonic Dances at the end of the [1981–2] season were incredibly important”, he recalls. “If I had to specify a work which created the orchestra’s sound as it is now, it would be those pieces.” That sound is already evident in the Ravel-like sumptuousness of two Vaughan Williams song cycles, and glitters through his recordings of the major Stravinsky ballets, recorded in the lucid acoustic of the new Butterworth Hall at Warwick Arts Centre.
And it can be heard at its most thrillingly raw in Rattle’s headlong 1986 reading of Messiaen’s Turangalîla-Symphonie. “What a great Mars Bar of a piece!” exclaimed Rattle at the sessions. Turangalîla had been central to his repertoire with the CBSO since the 1981–2 season; the piano soloist Peter Donohoe — a friend from Rattle’s Merseyside Youth Orchestra days — recalls their 1982 BBC Proms performance as the single greatest musical experience of his career.
That Turangalîla could become staple fare in Birmingham speaks for the revolution that Rattle was working in audience taste, building programmes in which invested Berg’s Lulu Suite and Schoenberg’s Erwärtung with the same emotional commitment and sonic beauty as Debussy’s Jeux or Ravel’s La Valse. Maria Ewing’s presence in Ravel’s Shéhérazade is evidence of the calibre of soloist flocking to work in Birmingham by 1989. Two decades later, in 2008, Alex Ross recommended Rattle’s CBSO Berg/Webern/Schoenberg CD as still the finest single-disc introduction to the Second Viennese School.
Sibelius and Mahler
Two symphonic cycles stand at the centre of Rattle’s recorded legacy with the CBSO. Sibelius has been a constant in Rattle’s musical life. As early as 1980 he described Sibelius’s Fifth as one of “my showpieces”, but a weekend-long live cycle at Warwick Arts Centre in 1983 revealed that his vision of this music ran far deeper. “For a long time now I’ve had strong views on how Sibelius should be performed”, he told Nicholas Kenyon in 1987. “He’s not taken as seriously as he deserves […] The music has had a romantic tradition foisted onto it. ”
Rattle found a sympathetic response in Birmingham (the CBSO had been conducted by Sibelius himself in the 1920s), and although his engagement with this music has continued to deepen, the freshness, clarity and organic momentum of his CBSO cycle make it an enduring benchmark. “A mighty account of the work, one which has enormous breadth and power”, said Gramophone of the Seventh. “It is the measure of a great performance that it can persuade the listener that this is not only a new and refreshing point of view, it is the only one.”
The other touchstone in Rattle’s Birmingham career was Mahler’s Resurrection symphony. He recalls his first encounter with the symphony at the age of eleven as “a completely transfiguring experience. It was the road to Damascus and it knocked me for six.” His multi-award-winning 1986 recording still conveys that sense of the overwhelming with an immediacy unmatched in the catalogue. “We are dealing here with conducting akin to genius,” pronounced Gramophone, “with insights and instincts that cannot be measured with any old yardstick.”
Rattle’s relationship with Mahler is intensely personal — and it’s for this reason that there’s no Birmingham Fifth or Ninth (although there is a poetic performance of Das klagende Lied). He approached each symphony as he felt ready for it, with results that gain accordingly in sincerity (the Seventh, in particular, took numerous attempts before a concert performance in the slightly boxy surroundings of Snape Maltings, Aldeburgh provided the “as live” urgency Rattle sought). In the case of the Eighth, that meant waiting until 2004, over a decade after the completion of Birmingham’s new Symphony Hall. The symphony was originally intended to be Rattle’s final Birmingham disc (though he continues to work regularly with the CBSO, never failing to tell players and audience that “I’m home”), but it’s telling that when he said farewell before an exultant and tearful capacity audience in August 1998, he did so with a final, heartfelt return to the Resurrection.
Sonic adventures
With the opening of Symphony Hall in May 1991, Rattle and his orchestra finally had a venue in which they could both perform and record. “It’s like a Christmas present for me”, declared the delighted conductor, and his final seven years with the CBSO found him revelling in the sonic glory of Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra, Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony and Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast and venturing into the Austro-German repertoire with a spacious rendition of Bruckner’s Seventh Symphony. Growing Birmingham audiences heard the local Elgar tradition renewed (Elgar had conducted the orchestra’s inaugural symphonic concert in 1920), following on from Rattle’s 1986 recording of another Birmingham fixture, The Dream of Gerontius.
It also gave him renewed scope to explore personal passions: joyous, swashbuckling performances of Haydn symphonies (he’d recorded The Creation in 1990), informed but never compromised by his work with the period-instrument Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. A gloriously breezy album of Percy Grainger was released; and a new love affair with the music of Karol Szymanowski began, leading to a best-selling disc of the Third Symphony and Stabat Mater, a concert performance of Król Roger that made full use of Symphony Hall’s vast space, and a return after the end of his Birmingham tenure for exquisitely bejewelled accounts of the song-cycles. At the end of the Songs of a Fairy-Tale Princess he turned to the audience and, grinning, asked “I think we should play them again — don’t you?”
New worlds
And with his decade-long festival Towards the Millennium (1990–2000), Rattle had a fresh impetus to perform the music of living composers (were any needed). Though he denies that he’d made it a condition of his ongoing contract with EMI, he’d lobbied forcefully for the chance to record Nicholas Maw’s epic Odyssey — the longest single-movement orchestral work in existence — in 1990. An impassioned recording of Henze’s Seventh Symphony prompted the composer to write his Tenth Symphony specifically for Rattle and the CBSO. And John Adams, visiting Birmingham, was astonished to find Rattle queuing at a local supermarket to buy soap and toothpaste for his stay in the city; the CBSO’s vibrant reading of Harmonielehre places this American composer’s music in the tradition of Mahler.
Most importantly of all, Rattle and the CBSO continued to create new music. The first official concert in Symphony Hall, on 12 June 1991, ended with Mahler’s Second, but it began with Momentum by the CBSO’s new Composer in Association, the 31-year-old Mark-Anthony Turnage. Momentum, Three Screaming Popes and Drowned Out were all commissioned for and premiered by Rattle and the CBSO, and the recorded performances of these works have a unique electricity; if Rattle believed in “definitive” recordings, these, perhaps, would be such. In 1998 Rattle began his farewell concert with another CBSO commission by an even younger composer: the rave-influenced single-movement symphony Asyla by Thomas Adès, then twenty-seven.
Four years later, on 7 September 2002, he began his first concert with the Berlin Philharmonic with exactly the same work. For a conductor who views his whole career as a work in progress, the message couldn’t have been clearer. Nicholas Maw, speaking after the premiere of Odyssey, summed it up:
I have often thought about the musical qualities that produced those memorable performances: musical gifts of a high order, of course, but also spiritual and intellectual curiosity, appetite, dedication, concentration, and the ability of all great conductors to make musicians give the best of themselves — to make them want to play. We are all fortunate to be living through the Rattle era.

Simon Rattle – The CBSO Years in Numbers
From 1980 to 1998 Simon conducted 934 concerts with the Orchestra including 16 world premieres. Three hundred and thirty-seven of those concerts were in Birmingham, 339 elsewhere in the UK including 28 Henry Wood Proms, 46 Royal Festival Hall and 39 Barbican concerts. Two hundred and eight of the total were on foreign tours to 25 countries on 4 continents. Those 934 concerts included music by 113 composers – 84 of them being 20th century and no less than 36 living at the time we performed their works. To accomplish all that, Simon rehearsed the Orchestra for a staggering (and I use the work advisedly!) 5,098 hours.
Which works top the bill as the most often performed work that Simon conducted with the CBSO? No, it’s not Sibelius 5th (37 times) or the 7th (30), but Beethoven’s Eroica (42). And which Mahler Symphony have we performed most? Perversely, it’s the least often performed of them all –No.7 (31). Mahler has been so pivotal to Simon’s work with us that a complete list is worth recording: No.1 – 17, No.2 – 13, No.3 – 8, No.4 – 12, No.5 -18, No.6 – 19, No.7 – 31, No.8 – 0 [subsequently recorded in 2005], No.9 – 14, No.10 – 11. Of other major symphonists Dvorak appears with only one (no.7 twice), Vaughan Williams one (No.5) and Tchaikovsky not at all!
Singers and instrumental soloists joining Simon for CBSO concerts add up to 261. Many of those, of course appear many times – and pianists and tenors head the list for the most frequent collaborators. It’s probably no surprise that most frequent guest instrumentalist was Peter Donohoe (47 times) followed by Alfred Brendel (20). Two tenors heading the singers are John Mitchinson (32) and Philip Langridge (27) with baritone Willard White (30) coming between them.
On top of all that public concert-giving activity wil all those artists, Simon and the Orchestra made 69 recordings for EMI [latterly Warner Classics] and spent 978 hours in the recording studio making them. In addition they made 25 programmes for both BBC and Independent Television.
