“Schubert is an Everest that all singers want to climb,” says countertenor Philippe Jaroussky, who, with pianist Jérôme Ducros, has now recorded 19 of the composer’s songs. “It’s not a question of virtuosity, it’s about colour, articulation and phrasing ... This is music written by an angel and it has always been with me, throughout my career as a musician: violinist, pianist and ultimately singer.” The album includes some of Schubert’s best-loved lieder, including ‘An die Musik’, ‘Die
Forelle’, ‘Ave Maria’, ‘An Silvia’, ‘Nacht und Traüme’, ‘Du bist die Ruh’ and ‘Litanei auf das Fest Allerseelen’.
As a countertenor, Jaroussky is often identified with the Baroque and early Classical eras, but he and Ducros have explored French song and they now turn to the composer who represents a defining force in lieder. “Schubert’s songs are poetic works that convey a wide range of emotions and they give my voice an opportunity to express itself in colours that are different from the Baroque repertoire,” continues Jaroussky. “His lieder transport us to a very intimate environment where we find
ourselves seeking answers to some very profound questions.”
After Jaroussky and Ducros gave a Schubert recital at London’s Wigmore Hall in 2020, Opera Today praised “Jaroussky’s exquisite phrasing and Ducros’ sensitivity” and described their interpretation of ‘Abendstern’, which also features on the album, as “a masterclass in the art of song”.
