The legendary The Streets are coming back to Warner Music UK, via 679, with their brand-new album ‘The Darker The Shadow The Brighter The Light’ coming out Friday 20th of October. Twenty years on from their debut album ‘Original Pirate Material’, which changed the UK Garage & hip-hop scene forever, Mike Skinner still finds himself an iconic pioneer of British music.
“Troubled Waters”, the first single of the highly anticipated album is out Wednesday 12th of July. It is the first full The Streets album since 2011 and has been in the works for 5 years. All songs have been written by Mike Skinner unlike the previously released 2020 mixtape ‘None Of Us Are Getting Out Of This Life Alive’ which was a collaborative project.
Mike Skinner will also announce a full 80-minute feature film to be released alongside the album and screened in selective “Everyman” cinemas around the UK throughout September & October. We are currently discussing with management the possibility of holding international screenings as a pre-order mechanic with an appearance by Mike Skinner.
The album embodies the timeless essence of The Streets, showcasing Skinner’s trademark lyrical wizardry and beats honed over a decade of building his other career as a legitimate bass/rap DJ in clubs. While Skinner takes the lead in writing all the songs, he also collaborates with his long-standing partners Kevin Mark Trail and Robert Harvey, as well as featuring the talented Teef on one track.
The songs on the album soundtrack the film and play the role of narrator of the film at times. And whilst neither the album or film exist without each, both can be enjoyed as standalone entities, offering unique experiences to the listeners and viewers, respectively.
