You would be forgiven for thinking that Carminho, the most electrifying international revelation of Portugal's native Fado, would have had a hard time deciding what to do next. Rare is the young singer that reaches such heights in only two albums.

First, there was the debut album, “Fado”, a Platinum release in Portugal that gave the young singer inroads into Spain and Brazil. Then, there was the follow-up “Alma”: a number 1 CD in Portugal that spent two years in the local charts, but also gave her an iTunes top-5 in Spain.

But, above all, “Alma” made her a household name in Brazil: sellout shows in Rio de Janeiro, Brazilian superstar Caetano Veloso calling her “a miracle”, Chico Buarque or Milton Nascimento inviting her to perform and record. After only two records and still in her twenties.

Some singers would be blinded by the success and the fame. But not Carminho. For her third album, she kept her regular producer and sideman Diogo Clemente, and kept Fado in her sights as her guiding star.

No matter that the new album features guest spots from musicians such as Nana Vasconcelos, Jaques Morelenbaum, Javier Limón or Carlinhos Brown. No matter that Marisa Monte gave her a brand new song, “Chuva no Mar”, and dropped by to record it as a duet. No matter that Caetano Veloso himself wrote a lyric for “O Sol, Eu e Tu”. Carminho is humbled by their support, but she knows very well the path she wants to take.

Fado is her soul, her voice, and so “Canto”, the third album, is precisely that: Fado as a continuing lineage, a genealogy that enriches itself with every new contribution but that remains at heart a Portuguese song of love and fate, burnished by the sun and the sea, the night and the emotion in the singer's voice. Few would doubt that Carminho knows perfectly how to put into song those emotions and that history. To prove it: “Canto” was a #1 album in the Portuguese charts, fast approaching Platinum. And, with the album set for release now internationally, the rest of the world will now understand why Carminho is the greatest new voice of Fado.
