The Brad Mehldau Trio's Day Is Done marks the Trio debut of drummer Jeff Ballard, who joins Mehldau on piano and Larry Grenadier on bass. For his second album on Nonesuch, Mehldau continues his Anglophile bent with an interpretation of English singer/songwriter Nick Drake's "Day Is Done," a unique take on the Beatles' quirky gem "Martha My Dear," and the British band Radiohead's "Knives Out." Also on the record are tunes by Burt Bacharach and Paul Simon, as well as two of Mehldau's own compositions, among others.

Mehldau calls Day Is Done, which was recorded mostly over an exhilarating six or seven hour period, a "high-octane record, with a few moments of respite here and there."
