Born in Belgium, Toots Thielemans became an American citizen. He began playing the accordion at the age of 3 and received his first harmonica at 17 years old. He learned the guitar by listening to the albums of Django Reinhardt. He was discovered by Benny Goodman in 1949. In 1950, he gave his first concerts in the United States and Sweden.
Since then, Toots Thielemans has performed and recorded with, among others, jazz greats such as Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Bill Evans, and Quincy Jones; and pop stars including Billy Joel, Paul Simon, and Julian Lennon. He has performed as a soloist for many film soundtracks, including “Midnight Cowboy,” “The Getaway,” and “Fried Green Tomatoes.” He also composed “Bluesette.” Toots Thielemans passed away just a year ago on August 22nd 2016, at the age of 94.
