“In the Olympia theater, a capacity crowd was waiting that night for Glenn Miller’s first French concert. As time was growing heavier and the audience restless, the band began to play without their leader, an innovation that was to be everyday reality in later years somewhere over the Channel, a plane was in trouble. Glenn Miller was never to be seen again.
For the French aficionados, however, who had been so long deprived of good jazz under the German occupation, this sense of loss had its own silver lining. Some outstanding members of the band stayed in Paris for a while. They used to go and sit in with the local musicians who performed at the Jazz Club Français, rue de Ranelagh. Among the latter was the unique Django Reinhardt.
These CBS recordings, made under the supervision of French pianist Yvonne Blanc in the happy atmosphere of post-Liberation France, show at their best such brilliant instrumentalists as Bernie Privin, Peanuts Hucko, Mel Powell, Carmen Mastren, Ray McKinley, Joe Schulman and, of course, the great Django himself. Together, they compose a fascinating study in swinging, carefree yet sophisticated jazz.”
