- Charles Mingus Interviewed by Nesuhi Ertegun
The greatest bassist leader jazz has ever known, Charles Mingus, with his spirited playing and spontaneity, always kept his ears and fingers on the pulse.
A reconfiguration of the 1997 Rhino box set which brought these legendary recordings to CD for the first time, Passions Of A Man is presented in a sleek, hard clamshell box, with the CDs held in elegant card sleeves, and a glossy 112-page booklet.
The albums included in this package, recorded for Atlantic between 1956 and 1961, are rightly considered Mingus’ best. The lavish collection of the jazz legend’s entire mid-’50s to early ’60s Atlantic Records output features 6CDs (and 40 tracks arranged in chronological order by recording date for maximum appreciation of Mingus’ evolution).
Including four alternate takes from the 1959 Blues & Roots sessions, many bonus tracks, plus an entire disc devoted to a complete 75-minute early ’60s Mingus interview with Atlantic co-founder/producer Nesuhi Ertegun, this beautiful box set also contains a deluxe book featuring essays by Mingus experts Stefano Zenni and co-producer Andrew Homzy, along with original liner notes from the albums represented, a complete Atlantic discography, and many rare photos.
Produced with the involvement of the bassist’s widow, Sue Mingus, this is a vital addition to any serious jazz library.
