2026 marks the centennial of Jazz icon Miles Davis, commemorating the beloved legend’s genius and innovation in the evolution of jazz. Miles Davis set out 35 years ago, recording two staple pieces before his passing in 1991, Doo-Bop and Miles & Quincy: Live in Montreux, both of which are being reissued today for Jazz Appreciation Month.
As an artist, Miles Davis was constantly moving forward, embracing new musical styles and creating genre-bending additions in the process. With Doo-Bop, recorded in early 1991, he endeavored to dive headlong into hip-hop. The project, which paired him with hip-hop producer Easy Mo Bee (Big Daddy Kane, The Notorious BIG, 2Pac), was ultimately cut short by Miles Davis’ unexpected passing. Releasing less than a year later in the Summer of 1992, it would become Miles Davis’ first posthumous record and featured Mo Bee as producer, co-writer and guest lyricist. The set will be reissued for the first time since its original release in 1992, as a 1LP black vinyl available April 10.
Miles Davis and Quincy Jones recorded live at the Montreux Jazz Festival on July 8, 1991, just two months before Davis’ passing. The set features Miles Davis revisiting extraordinary arrangements from Gil Evans's early landmark Columbia records, like “Miles Ahead” and “The Duke,” with the electrifying live show conducted by legendary producer, composer, and arranger Quincy Jones. Miles & Quincy: Live In Montreux will receive its first official U.S. release as part of the Rhino Reserve audiophile line, mirroring the original European artwork and packaging. An additional standard 1LP black vinyl will also be available on April 10.
Rhino Reserve titles are pressed on 180-gram premium-quality black vinyl locally at Fidelity Record Pressing’s brand-new plant in Oxnard, CA, and cut by the highly respected Matt Lutthans at Mastering Lab.
