January 1985. The young German TV channel RTL Plus airs the only video clip show in German TV: “Formel Eins”. Premiered is the video clip of a young German pop duo, armed with keytar and white guitar, performing on a misty stage. Surrounded by glaring neon lights, one leisurely dressed, the other wearing an oversized white suit, they perform the song that will turn them into superstars overnight. Says Thomas Anders about the song that was number one in the German charts for 6 weeks and sold more than 8 million copies worldwide: “ ‘You’re My Heart, You’re My Soul’ changed my life”.
Although many a journalist felt obliged to criticize the two for the way they dress and the kind of music they make, they made an unparalleled career, with chart hits like “Cheri Cheri Lady”, “Brother Louie” and “Geronimo’s Cadillac” and more than 60 million albums sold alone in the 1980s. Modern Talking achieved cult status and made history, in Germany as well as abroad.
After one of the most successful re-union and come back in the late 1990s and despite the overall success, a certain tension between the two led to the final splitting up in 2003, which had an enormous echo in media.
Whilst one of the two concentrated on turning more or less talented young people into pop idols, Thomas Anders never stopped doing what he likes best. “Singing and performing is great fun”, he says and proves this by touring the world, from Cape Town to Hong Kong, from Tel Aviv to New York, from Santiago de Chile to Moscow, always having not only new songs, but also Modern Talking classics on his set list. Being a professional entertainer, stagnation is not part of Thomas’ vocabulary – to him it is of utmost importance to not only interpret Modern Talking classics, but to keep them lively and up-to-date at any time. With HISTORY, the Koblenz-based singer and composer now releases 10 respectively 13 Modern Talking classics, all re-worked and modernized with producer Christian Geller.
Christian Geller does not only stand for HEINO’s No 1 album Mit Freundlichen Grüßen, he is also long-term partner to Thomas, with whom he wrote several smash his for well-known artists such as the No Angels. The album is coming very close to the live arrangements Thomas performs on stage. Working in the studio Anders dais to his producer “Look, these recordings sound so very perfectly, let’s make a new album based on these.”
“Christian Geller is workaholic and able to perfectly transfer the spirit of Modern Talking to modern. What we want, though, is not only to re-edit the well-known hits, but show that the story continues with my brand new songs. “ “You’re My Heart, You’re My Soul” changed the life of Thomas Anders. On HISTORY he now presents his personal favorites as well as new hits. HISTORY will transfer to the fascination of Modern Talking to the 21st century and find its place in the fans’ hearts.
