Underground funk musician Prophet has his comeback via Stones Throw Records. Until this year he had only put his name to one album, the 1984 private-press record Right On Time. Now comes new album Wanna Be Your Man, which he co-produced with labelmate Mndsgn. Founder of Stones Throw, Chris Manak (aka Peanut Butter Wolf), has been inspired by Prophet’s first album since he found it crate-digging in San Francisco nearly two decades ago. Full of mind-blowing left-field boogie, Right On Time has garnered an underground cult following of record collectors and funk fanatics. It can now be found buried deep within record stores or changing hands for hundreds of dollars online. After referencing Prophet’s music in interviews as “one of his Holy Grails” for years, Chris finally met him in person at a record fair. Chris then invited Prophet to make his live return opening for Snoop Dogg and Dâm-Funk’s 7 Days of Funk show in 2013. After introducing him to Mndsgn at the show, the two started cooking up the music that would become Wanna Be Your Man. Now with Wanna Be Your Man, after over three decades of silence, Prophet can finally take up his rightful place in funk history his own way. For fans of Mndsgn, Thundercat, Doug Hream Blunt and Dam-Funk.
