After Roger Waters left Pink Floyd for a solo career, David Gilmour and Nick Mason welcomed back keyboardist Richard Wright, who had left Floyd during the fraught album sessions for The Wall. With Wall co-producer Bob Ezrin the trio created a new album, much of it recorded on David Gilmour’s houseboat Astoria, moored on the river Thames.

Sleeve designer Storm Thorgerson returned also to do the album cover, shooting  hundreds of hospital beds on a beach to create a ‘river of beds’, inspired by a line of lyric from Yet Another Movie: “visions of an empty bed.”

With supporting singles including Learning To Fly, the album peaked at #3 in the overall US Chart, but hit  #1 in the separate Billboard CD chart, staying there for 6 weeks and going Platinum. The album also peaked at #3 in the UK, while the first Pink Floyd tour since The Wall dates of 1981 was a huge success, playing to 4.25 million fans.
