To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Dr. Feelgood’s first studio release and debut album, their first four albums ‘Down By The Jetty’, ‘Malpractice’, ‘Stupidity’ and ‘Sneakin’ Suspicion’ have been remastered and will be reissued on vinyl and CD on 25 July.

A reaction to the prog and glam of the early 1970s, the back-to-basics sound of U.K. pub rock was rooted in the rock and roll and R&B of earlier decades, and few bands delivered it more powerfully than Dr. Feelgood. The Essex quartet had years of live performance under their belts when they entered the studio to record ‘Down By The Jetty’ and what followed was a hugely prolific time for the band, releasing an incredible eight albums in just five years.

This remaster and reissue series includes…

‘Down By The Jetty’ - Produced by Vic Mailen, ‘Down By The Jetty’ has the energy of a band that has relentlessly played live for half a decade and nothing demonstrates this more than the dozen cuts that precede the ‘Bony Moronie’/‘Tequila’ concert recording that closes this debut.

Guitarist Wilko Johnson penned several originals for this record, including ‘She Does It Right’ and ‘Roxette,’ and the bluesy shout of frontman Lee Brilleaux seals the deal. This record is unquestionably an inspiration to bands including The Jam, Boomtown Rats and Blondie.

’Malpractice’ - First released on vinyl in 1975 and then on CD in 1990 by Grand Records, ‘Malpractice’ shows off the mastery of guitarist Wilko Johnson's songs alongside such inspired covers as ‘Riot in Cell Block #9’ and of course his Stonesy playing takes no prisoners.

’Stupidity’ - ‘Stupidity’ captures the relentless, hard-driving energy of Dr. Feelgood at their peak. Comprised of recordings taken from 1975 tours, the music is presented raw and without overdubs, making it clear that the dynamic friction between guitarist Wilko Johnson and vocalist Lee Brilleaux could propel the band toward greatness.

These unvarnished and exciting performances reveal the Johnson originals ‘She Does It Right’ and ‘All Through the City’ as rock & roll classics. Side 1 was recorded at Sheffield City Hall on 23rd May 1975 and Side 2 at Southend Kursaal on 8th November 1975.

‘Sneakin' Suspicion’ - ‘Sneakin' Suspicion’ is their fourth album and was released in 1977. During recording, the band nearly disbanded following the departure of guitarist, songwriter and focal point, Wilko Johnson. The album reached number 10 in the UK Albums Chart in June 1977, and remained in that chart for six weeks. It also spawned their first single to enter the corresponding UK Singles Chart.

Dr. Feelgood Dr. Feelgood
Dr. Feelgood are a British pub rock band, formed in 1971. The classic line-up included Lee Brilleaux (b. 1953, d. 7 April 1994; vocals/harmonica), Wilko Johnson (b. John Wilkinson, 1947; guitar), John B. Sparks (b. 1953; bass) and John ‘The Big Figure’ Martin (drums). Initially based in Canvey Island, Essex, on the Thames estuary, Dr. Feelgood broke into the London circuit in 1974. Brilleaux’s menacing personality complemented Johnson’s propulsive, jerky stage manner, while the guitarist’s staccato style dominated the group’s idiosyncratic brand of angular rhythm and blues. Their debut album, Down By The Jetty, was released in 1974, but despite critical approbation, it was not until ...
