A Fantastic Woman is a 2017 Chilean film directed by Sebastián Lelio (The Year of the Tiger). It follows Marina (Daniela Vega), a transsexual woman living with an older man named Orlando. One night Orlando suddenly falls seriously and passes away as he arrives at a hospital. Instead of being able to grieve, Marina is treated with suspicion by doctors and Orlando’s family, who view her gender identity as a perversion. The situation gets worse as Orlando’s family blocks Marina from the funeral and threatens to throw her out of Orlando’s flat. So Marina is forced to battle the same prejudices she has spent a lifetime fighting to be recognizes as who she is – a fantastic woman.

A timely drama about identity and bigotry in the modern world, A Fantastic Woman has been a critically lauded since its debut at the 2017 Berlin Film Festival, where it won the Silver Bear for Best Screenplay. Since then it has been selected as the Chilean entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the- 90th Academy Awards. Scoring duties for A Fantastic Woman fell to British electronic artist Matthew Herbert. Herbert used his background in the UK electronic scene to compose a gorgeous score mixing classical themes with dance-infused tracks dripping with elements of house and synthpop. Milan Records is releasing the CD soundtrack to A Fantastic Woman in February.

"In the mid 90’s, Chile was still trying to shake off the weight of dictatorship. I was a young man who aspired to make films and who lived close to the explosion of electric music, whose seemingly apolitical condition always seemed subversive to me.

I remember the excitement of listening to Matthew’s records and the revelation that Bodily Functions meant to me and to so many of my friends. Since then I followed with admiration the work of Herbert, Dr. Rockit, his Big Band and of all his multiple identities.

After filming A Fantastic Woman, I knew that the film needed a powerful score unafraid of beauty.

The identity of the film goes through different film genres refusing to be reduced in a single gesture. It’s a trans-genre film about a transgender woman. Multi-identities, again. I remember being in my house in Berlin and literally jumping out of my chair when the idea of contacting Matthew Herbert crosses my mind.

We sent him a rough cut of the movie, we had a conversation via Skype and the connection was very natural. We talked about Herrmann, Mancini, Delerue, Ravel, Mahler, that a film is like a Trojan horse… Needing a score that was mysterious, captivating, hypnotic, romantic and had the ability to contain, like a membrane, all the forces that inhabit the film and that operate in opposite directions. After that conversation everything was fluid between Matthew and I.

Matthew is an artist of exquisite refinement. Hius msic elevated A Fantastic Woman to a space of abstraction and delight, of melancholy and ecstasy. He connected with the deepest layers of the story of Marina and Orlando and sublimated them by coming up with a sonorous universe in full tension between tradition and the avant-garde, which is the territory in which the film lives.

Seeing Matthew in action during the recording session at Abbey Road, in London, on September 30th, 2016 was one of the highlights of my life as a filmmaker.

What Matthew Herbert has done for this film is simply fantastic and for that I will always be very grateful."

– Sebastián Lelio
