“The idea behind the soundtrack for City of God was to use music to help differentiate the three different time periods in which the film is set, the 60s, the early 70s and the late 70s.

For those scenes set in the 1960s, the era of the “romantic outlaw,” we used traditional samba by classic songwriters such as Cartola. In the 70s, samba became funkier. Raul Seixas, Tim Maia and Hyaldon were great exponents of this type of music and were naturals for the soundtrack.

For the third phase of the film, the Rio gang wars, we needed music with more of an edge. Antonio Pinto and Ed Côrtes gave us this, with music that is dark and moody but retains its Brazilian essence.

At a time when Brazilan cinema is undergoing a dramatic renaissance, Antonio and Ed are producing some of the finest film music around. They were the only choice as composers for the City of God soundtrack.”
