One of the most recorded conductors of his generation, José Serebrier here completes his much lauded survey of Dvořák's symphonies, adding Nos. 1, 4 and 5 to a series of Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra performances that have been praised for their considerable expressivity, remarkable handling of detail and supreme orchestral balance. The works are accompanied by a variety of other concert pieces, among which are a selection of Dvořák's lively, nationalist-driven Slavonic Dances as well as the wonderfully lyrical Legends, endearing miniature tone poems which reveal the Czech composer's mastery of the shortest forms.
José Serebrier, born in Montevideo, Uruguay to Russian and Polish parents in 1938, is one of the world’s most prolific recording artists, which is hardly surprising, given the tender age at which his prodigious talents were recognised. He was just eleven years old when he first conducted his school orchestra, eventually touring the country with them in over 100 performances in just four years. At the age of fifteen he won a national composition competition with his overture Legend of Faust, and while he was considered too young to conduct the national orchestra himself at its premiere, Eleazar de Carvalho, who did conduct the first performance, took the young Serebrier under his wing, becoming his conducting teacher at Tanglewood. This led to a United States State Department Fellowship allowing him to study at the Curtis Institute of Music with Vittorio Giannini, and later with Aaron Copland at Tanglewood, as well as conducting with the great Pierre Monteux. His first symphony, written at the age of 17, was premiered by Leopold Stokowski no less, and he has gone on to compose over one hundred works alongside a busy international conducting schedule. In a career spanning over six decades Serebrier has received an incredible 37 GRAMMY© Awards nominations of which he has won eight.
José Serebrier is, quite simply, a recording legend. In his incredible career it perhaps comes as a surprise that, while he has previously recorded Dvořák’s Symphonies Nos. 8 & 9, this series marks his first ever recordings of Symphonies Nos. 1–7, and follows the Glazunov Symphonies and Concertos available as a box set from Warner Classics. With liner notes by Maestro Serebrier, and a world-class production team on board, this is set to be an important landmark in the recording of Dvořák’s Symphonies.
The instalments released in the Dvořák cycle released thus far have garnered rave reviews from the classical press:
"Enthusiasm and sonic loveliness mark conductor José Serebrier’s latest traversal of Dvořák, a projected complete cycle of the symphonies and symphonic poems...a thrilling experience."
"It should surely rank with the finest – if not the best of all"
International Record Review
"A fresh-faced account of the ‘New World’ Symphony, a very expressive performance, subtly detailed and with a wide dynamic range"
Classical Source
"Serebrier launches his Dvořák symphony cycle from the top. New major CD symphony cycles are always good news, especially when they hail from a conductor as experienced and as imaginative as José Serebrier.”
