Virtual Voodoo
Distant ritual drums from historic Africa or the urban sound of supporters at the city football stadium?…; Animals stampeding across prairies or the impatient jostle of nervous crowds in metros, train stations, shopping centres and city malls?…; Beautifully blinking stars of the distant Universe seen by night from a beach at the edge of an island, or the pulsating lights of the distant city, seen from a plane?…; Atomic chaos of a dying breed – with no sense for harmony and rhythm left –, or impressive audio-visual dance of the modern age?… The playful songs on BUGI-VUGI try to grasp, indicate and illustrate fragments of these charming, constantly-repeating rhythmic patterns – simultaneously old & young, wild and urban, this never-ending & grooving pulsation around us, called Life. The art and film of the late 50’s and 60’s (Mondriani and Pollock’s paintings, Jacques Tati’s “Playtime”) heavily inspired the making of these songs. VIRTUAL VOODOO is one of many projects of Iztok Turk, extremely influential and sincerely respected, “forever young godfather” of Slovene techno culture and music. He belongs to the very first line of techno (pop) creators, but at the same time he is rolling the wheel of house and ambient minimal music, organising social club events, chill out parties and improvised music sessions. He began as a musician (drummer, guitarist and vocalist) in late 70’s Slovenian punk groups and later on (early 80’s) he formed the highly acclaimed and stylish techno pop quartet (two boys and two girls) Videosex, most of whose material he wrote by himself. Nowadays he is booked as a programmer, producer and remixer (he also works closely with Laibach as a co-producer).
