Van Halen’s acclaimed final studio album, 2012’s A Different Kind of Truth, makes its highly anticipated return to vinyl and CD this fall as part of Rhino’s annual Rocktober celebration. Out of print for years, it was the band’s first studio album with original singer David Lee Roth in nearly 30 years.
A Different Kind of Truth is available now on CD and 2LP pressed on 180-gram black vinyl. A special ultra-clear 180-gram vinyl version is also available the same day exclusively at select brick-and-mortar retail stores.
Anticipation for a Van Halen and Roth reunion hit a fever pitch in 1996 when they recorded two new tracks for the band’s Best Of – Volume I. However, the wait would continue until 2007’s reunion tour, featuring Roth, Eddie and Alex Van Halen, and Eddie’s son Wolfgang on bass. Following the tour—the most successful of the band’s career—Wolfgang began exploring the band’s archive, unearthing songs Van Halen demoed in the late 1970s and early 1980s, which provided the spark for a new album.
Eddie, Alex, and Wolfgang started reworking several of those tracks, including the 1976 demo for “She’s The Woman.” The new version of that song convinced Roth to join them in the studio, setting the stage for an album that seamlessly combined songs inspired by those demos with new material written by the quartet.
When A Different Kind of Truth arrived in February 2012, it delivered one of the most improbable revivals in rock history, debuting at #2 on the Billboard 200 and quickly earning gold certification. Driven by joyfully aggressive cuts like “Tattoo,” “China Town,” and “Outta Space,” the record captured the chemistry and unbridled power that defined the band’s early years. Today, the group’s 12th studio album stands as a powerful capstone to the Van Halen legacy.
